Sakai Bōichi (Edo Period, Tokyo National Museum Collection, Nationally Designated Important Cultural Property)
Originally painted on the reverse side of the "Wind God and Thunder God" screen by Ogata Kōrin, it was separated from its front side in 1974 (Showa 49) and became distinct screens. On the reverse of the "Wind God" side, autumn grasses are depicted in the wind, while on the "Thunder God" side, summer grasses are shown drenched in sudden rain. The contrast between gold and silver grounds, as well as between celestial deities and earthly flowers and grasses, presents a major highlight, making it arguably the finest work by Hōitsu.
The carving was meticulously crafted with an emphasis on lines to evoke the texture of grass and flowers, ensuring it complements the pear-grained surface.
