Thirty-six Views of Mount Fuji is a series of paintings by the late Edo period ukiyo-e artist Katsushika Hokusai, depicting a sea of trees below, sardine clouds in the sky, and snowy fields on the summit of Mount Fuji. "Kaifu" means a soft southern wind that blows in summer. "Kanagawa Oki Namiura" is composed of three elements: a big wave, three ships, and Mount Fuji in the background. Ukiyo-e was introduced to Europe in the late 1870s and was highly praised by the impressionist painter Van Gogh, and influenced European artists, such as composer Debussy, who came up with the idea for his symphonic poem "La Mer". This work is a precise cast of two of Hokusai's most famous paintings of Mount Fuji.
